CONFIDENCE
Our confidence and most of our business and life success or failure is dependent on the way we think and feel.
I’ve spent a lifetime studying success principles and reading biographies and auto-biographies of people throughout history, in all fields of endeavour, who are considered to be ‘successful’.
Names spring to mind such as:
- Political reformists and thought-leaders:Nelson Mandela, Abraham Lincoln, John F Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi
- Political leaders: Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt
- Sporting greats: Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, George Best, Pele and Alex Ferguson
- Scientists and inventors:Albert Einstein, Nikola Tesla, Alexander Fleming and Stephen Hawking
- Writers: Oscar Wilde, George Orwell and George Bernard Shaw
- Artist: Pablo Picasso
- Musicians:the Beatles, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson
- Actors: Charlie Chaplin John Travolta and Marlon Brando
- Movie Directors: Steven Spielberg and Alfred Hitchcock
- Aviators: Orville and Wilbur Wright and Charles Lindbergh
- Businessmen: Henry Ford, Walt Disney, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson and Ray Kroc
- Public figure: Princess Diana
That’s just my quick list of the most influential people of recent times – I’m sure you could think of many others.
One theme shows up consistently however, – these people suffer setbacks just like we all do, yet they continue to believe in their dreams. They are not deterred by obstacles and they don’t give up. The concept of an ‘overnight success’ is a myth, because that success is founded on the character and confidence developed through struggle.
“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.”
Henry Ford
PURPOSE & PERSISTENCE
You may have heard of the ‘Ten Thousand Hours’ principle, proposed by author Malcolm Gladwell in his book, ‘Outliers’, which stated that 10,000 hours of deliberate practice were required to become an expert in any field. His examples included the world-famous ‘Beatles’ rock band, who played relentlessly in the bars of Hamburg before they became an ‘overnight success’ back in Liverpool; and Bill Gates, who practiced with a computer around the clock from his teen years, prior to becoming an ‘overnight success’ with Microsoft.
The key point was that these people had a dream, a purpose or a mission to fulfill. They were human like the rest of us and were thus subject to the fears, self-doubt and occasional lack of confidence to be good enough to make it all work, just as we all are. Yet their persistence, backed with some definable tools and techniques, such as creative visualisation, steadily built their inner confidence until it became an unshakeable resolve. They developed self-confidence with a winning mindset.
MINDSET
That awareness of your purpose gives life meaning, which in turn leads to an inner calmness and an outwardly directed focus of attention. That focus and the belief in your ability to fulfill your life’s purpose creates a confident mindset. To get to that point however, often requires some paradigm shifts and mastery of your own self-talk. That’s where tools and techniques like behavioural science study and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) can make a huge difference in your ability to foster a winning mindset.
I run workshops and seminars or I can tailor a program, specifically designed for you or to suit the needs of your organisation or team, to help you get the results that you want and deserve.
